A day at Axpona 2011: Transmission Audio

I’ve heard the Transmission Audio M1i before. At that time, I remarked on how spooky the imaging was — in fact, it might have been the best I’ve ever heard. The other standout was the bass response — clearly way deeper than it had any reason to be. Well, while the imaging was intact here at Axpona, the bass was not. The M1i sounded great, don’t get me wrong — it’s just that I’ve heard them sound spectacular too.

First, the LSA Statements, now the Transmission Audio M1i. It was about this time that I figured out that the Sheraton was in fact, sucking down bass like some kind of audio vampire.

Hmmm.

Anyway, in this room I learned how awesome the new Oppo BDP-95 is. For $1k, this is fantastic digital source. Did I mention you can hook a hard-drive up to it and run all the playback through the Oppo? Yeah. Pretty slick. Me want!

You know what else I want? Some of the music in this room. I had some notes and now they’re all gone, but somewhere in there, I know that the guy running this room was also at RMAF. He also had about 500 CDs of music that he’s recorded and mastered himself. And some of that music was super-high res: 172kHz! I had planned to get some, but time got away from me … oh well. If someone can point me in the right direction, that’d be awesome. 😉

  1. Low Frequencies were an unfortunate victim in this room. We even brought in a sub, which proved no match for the room’s insatiable appetite for sucking out our bass – so we disconnected it and let the monitors fly on their own.

    Electronics were from Italy’s KLIMO LABOR, including a pair of TINE 40wpc Class-A tube Monoblocs, and their MERLINO preamplifier.

    The OPPO BDP-95 is a wunderkind player that’ll do everything but play LPs. I’m definitely going to get one of those bad boys in my stable for digital duties.
